Sega Megadrive Mini Review

The release of retro, mini consoles continues. This is probably the best one yet!

If you've used one of the other retro minis like the NES, SNES or PlayStation Classic, you'll be familiar with the concept. A small console which emulates the games and looks of the real deal. They sell on nostalgia but are also a fun way to experience your favourite classics - most of the time.

For instance, The PS Classic and C64 Mini weren't universally appreciated. The Megadrive Mini will have no such problems. It has a strong selection of 40 games and they run beautifully!

The volume slider is non-functional but it does move.

How beautifully? I didn't have an actual Megadrive Model 1 console to test it against but it seemed better than the Steam emulation at least. I'm aware that this is not a particularly high bar but you won't be left wanting. The Mini does not have a rewind feature like on Steam and some other mini consoles.

The upscaling and sound is awe-inspiring! I had a constant smile on my face as I relived these classics. The sound was perfect and the controls were amazingly responsive. It helps that the controller is so good. The buttons are well sized and provide instant feedback and the dpad is a joy!

If you loved these games back in the day, or want to see what the hype was all about, the Sega Megadrive Mini is a no-brainer.
