Mini NES Review

Nintendo's mini box of glorious nostalgia and fun has landed! Here's a mini review of this gorgeous little thing.

This palmtop sized console has 30 built in games and is connected via an HDMI cable (included) and powered by a micro USB cable, also included. You will need a USB AC adaptor if you want to plug it in but many USB output devices should be able to power it as well. I used my Xbox 360 front USB port and it works.

The outputted 8-bit graphics are surprisingly sharp and colourful on an HDTV and the sound (which consists of beeps and boops) is clear. I couldn't help but beam with joy as I sampled the games.

The full sized controller shows how small the console is.
The controller is a faithful reproduction of the original NES one but I could not compare them side-by-side. The dpad is glorious but needed some force to register input. The A and B buttons are wonderfully tactile.

Unfortunately the cable length is way too short. It's less than 1m/3 foot long, so you're going to either have to sit close to the TV or have the console close to you. The latter makes more sense as you will need to push the reset button on the console itself to access the main menu where you select games and use save states. This is less than ideal and I wish I could do this from the controller itself.

There are 30 built in games with no option to add more. I think the selection is decent with something for everyone. If you had to buy each from the virtual console at an average of $2 or so, the Mini NES looks a good buy. Plus you get an actual, quality, cute piece of hardware. I think more than anything else, the Mini NES is a great collectible and will likely be a popular stocking filler for Christmas, provided there is actual stock!

Take it for what it is - a quaint piece of nostalgia and a hassle free throwback to the good ol' days. This is not a remade NES and it cannot do what the original NES can. Yes you can emulate or buy these games on the Virtual Console but that misses the point. Nintendo were very clever in marketing and creating this device as it will give them some presence of the holiday sales period, important given that the Wii U is unlikely to shift units especially after the Switch was revealed.

In a nutshell:
