Genre: action, ecchi
Format: 12 episodes (22min) based on light novels
Kämpfer is an anime about a Red v.s. Blue battle.
The teams consist of female warriors who must fight each other using
melee weapons, guns or magic. If you are not a female, you will be
turned into one. Why must you fight? Dunno, lol!
Sounds ridiculous, right? Well that's Kämpfer, pretty much. A few high school students gain the ability to become warriors called Kämpfer. They acquire bracelets, either red or blue, and must fight warriors who wear bracelets of the opposite colour. Before they fight they must transform. This transformation unlocks their powers and changes their personality and gender. All Kämpfers must be female. The kicker is that one of the Kämpfer (Sennou Natsuru) is a male and must change into a woman before he can fight.

Action takes the back seat
for most of the anime with fanservice, romance and gags dominating
proceedings. A weird relationship occurs between Sennou and a pretty
girl called Sakura. Male Sennou has a crush on Sakura but Sakura is a
lesbian and in love with the female Sennou but Sakura doesn't know
about the whole Kämpfer deal.
A typical Kampfer scene |
There are 3 other girls (also Kämpfer) who
all want Sennou (male version) too. So yes, most of the anime is
about the weird love pentagon Sennou is in and the difficulties he
faces when changing into a girl. As mentioned before, the series is loaded with
fanservice and the genderswap element will have its appeal to
some. It has its moments and there is a twist late on but then it's
all over. At only 12 episodes, Kämpfer doesn't answer any questions
and seems more like a pilot or a teaser of sorts. The plot develops
very little and it seems like it was written just to put a twist on
the fanservice.
The series is based on 12 light novels which
inspired a manga as well so at some point the plot should eventually
progress. As for the anime, don't expect too much. If you want
stereotypical fan service and the genderswap element sounds appealing
then Kämpfer might be for you. There's no word on a second season
yet.
This is very educational content and written well for a change. It's nice to see that some people still understand how to write a quality post.! One Punch Man
